The Republic of Kiribati is an island country in Oceania comprised of 33 small islands scattered in an Ocean area of 3.44 million square kilometers. They are divided into 3 island groups which are;

1. The Gilbert islands that straddle the Equator with 17 islands that are all populated.

2. The Northern Line islands that are the eastern most point with 8 islands that all populated.

3. The Phoenix Group which used to be protected area with 8 islands that are all unpopulated with the exception of Canton.
